Penang Food Hunt 2008

We participated in the Penang Food Hunt 2008 last weekend. 2 cars, 8 of us. Team 57 had Elaine, Jane, Regine & Kin, while Team 58 consisted of Burnie, Cing Yee, Sim & yours truly. The hunt flagged off in Penang, instead of KL. We drove up north on Saturday morning, early morning, in order to reach on time for the registration & briefing by 11am. Team 57 started the journey at 5.30am while Team 58 at 6am.

We only made 1 pee-stop at Tapah R&R. Smooth journey all the way, except slightly jam along the Penang Bridge. We reached Paradise Sandy Bay at 10.30am, ½ hour to spare before the final briefing. There was a sea of RED in the ballroom. Theme for the hunt was RED. Everyone wore RED t-shirt. What a scene!

#1 : Flag off

The hunt was divided into a few sections, in order to disperse us. 90+ cars participated in this hunt. We flagged off at 12noon sharp.

Leg 1, we were required to find 4 famous eatery place in Penang. Google map were attached for each location. Both teams received different routes & off we went, separately. Team 58 has a GPS system inside the car, so we had less problem finding. Still got problem only less, I think. Haha. Round and round we went, we found the 4 places after 2 ½ hours. Estimated time should be 2 hours so that we would be able to finish the hunt in 7 hours.

#2 : The places that we went for stamps

We were required to get a stamp from the 4 eateries and ate at 1 of the 4 stalls. We had to take picture of us enjoying the food. The picture would then be developed, as proof that we were there.

#3 : mee goreng & mee rebus at Edgecumbe, Gurney Drive

There were 3 challenges we needed to complete during the hunt. Challenge 1 was Kuih Muih Challenge. Digi was the co-sponsor; hence we were made to go to their center at Gurney Plaza to collect the Challenge. First, we have to sms a tagline to Digi. Once sent, the Clerk-of-Course gave us a piece of paper. (Handphone, Must-Bring-Item #1) Name the 5 pictures of local kuih and to submit the answer by 2pm at Cititel Hotel. Kuih? Yeah, because it’s all about food. Calls were made to a Malay colleague for answers.

We could identify Onde-Onde & Bahulu. The rest?
Green colour on top, glutinous rice at the bottom = Kuih Seri Muka.
Green outside, longish like popiah, wrapped with shredded coconut = Kuih Ketayap
Brownish cup-kuih with shredded coconut on top = Kuih Kosui
(But to my eyes, those looked like doughnuts. Team 57 had a great laugh at me!)

#4 : the Kuih Muih Challenge

Leg 2 was a walk hunt. “Shell We Walk” (Shell was a co-sponsor too), inside New World Foodcourt, along Swatow lane, near Jalan Burma. We reached there at 2.30pm. When we were briefed on what to do there, the Clerk-of-Course saw me holding the Kuih Muih Challenge sheet. He said,” You have to submit that ASAP. The counter will close 2 hours from flag off time.” I stared at him, looked at my watch. DAMN! It was already 2.30pm! Driver was sent to submit the challenge while the remaining 3 members stayed there to complete Leg 2 & Challenge 2.

Leg 2 has 10 questions to answer. Challenge 2 was a stage challenge. We were wondering, what was a stage challenge. We have to dance? Sing? It’s a food hunt. Of course it has to be related to food. And on the stage, we saw teams cooking. Cook what? We sent Sim to stage while Cing Yee & I covered the ground to finish the 10 questions. Looking at the food names, made us so hungry! But we didn't have time to eat! The queue for Challenge was long, so we left Sim alone there. And by the time she finished, only we knew what she was cooking. It was appam. Points were given based on the look. 4, 7 or 10 points. She got us a perfect 10!

#5 : Sim in action

The 10 questions were tough to crack. We only managed to answer 3 correctly. Team 57 was there too. After exchanging answers, we submitted the answers. Off we went to finish Leg 3, the drive hunt. We have 3 ½ hours before submission at 7pm.

I was the navigator, as Cing Yee can’t read in the car. Sim was new to treasure hunting. Turned here and there, the brains worked hard to decipher all the questions. Some easy, but many “tembak”s!

Oh, Challenge 3 was to take photos of us at historical places in Penang. We have to develop and submit to get points. While driving around town, we stopped at Masjid Kapitan Keling, St John Church & Eastern & Oriental Hotel. (Digital Camera, Must-Bring-Item #2). We had a scared when we could not find a shop to develop the photos. We needed to submit the “eat photo”, plus the historical places photos. We just cruised along the last 3 questions so that we could find photo shop.

#6 : in front of E&O hotel

We only managed to break 2 treasure clues. The remaining 2, no time to think! Too busy navigating. We submitted on time at Padang Kota Lama, Fort Cornwallis. Tired. And hungry. And we thought there would be a lot of food to eat since this was a food hunt. No lor, we looked a lot at food names, but no eating lor. We were given RM10 voucher each to be spent on 6th December. We went back to New World Food court to use the vouchers. All food was tasty due to the hunger pang. We didn’t go to the Gurney Drive for food. Just filled up the tummy and checked-in to rest.

#7 : all wiped out

We were supposed to stay in Paradise Sandy Bay, but due to high occupancy, 20 cars were moved to Hydro Majestic Hotel, 3km further down the road. The prize giving was on Sunday morning. We checked-out at 8am and went back to Paradise Sandy Bay for breakfast. Sim & I went to the beachfront for a walk & took some photos! Hahaha.

When the answers the announced, we thought the prizes would be gone from our hands. So many wrong answers. The MC started announcing the winner. “30th placing, with the score of 109, goes to Team 57.” All of us were shocked, especially Team 57. Initial calculation, total score was 74. Elaine forgot to add 35 points from other challenges. Hahaha! They won 6 Digi-Yellowman fridge magnets and 1 voucher (RM150) for a boat cruise. Team 57 has 1 additional correct answer than Team 58. Since they only gave out 30 prizes, Team 58 went home empty handed, but full of fun!

#8 : inside the goodie bags
