overdue ttc posting
i posted daily during my teacher training course. from day 1 till the end of the course. after that i only posted randomly. i posted daily because i want to remember what i have done during that period.
i said i would write more about ttc. here it goes...
i was informed about this course last year in october. it was during our private class that the teacher informed us about this course with lance schuler from inspya yoga. my sisters attended his workshop before and they liked his teaching. we didnt have much time to think about this because we had to register by the next day in order to catch the early bird package rate. it was quite costly, so decision has to be made very carefully.
my only concern was, would i be able to take 20 days off to attend this course? it would be an intensive course. i had to decide fast. it was sunday when we were informed about the course. the next day, i informed my boss about my plan to take 20 days off for the course. she asked a few questions :
q : where is the course?
a : in malaysia.
q : where?
a : somewhere mont kiara.
q : would i be able to go back to office in case she needed me to do urgent work?
a : sure, if my class end early, or worse, weekend.
approval was given and i agreed to register for the course. my sisters kept saying that this would be the best chance for the 3 of us register for the course. firstly, lance is a very good teacher. secondly, we didnt have to fly out of the country. and we signed up. no turning back. we waited patiently for the days to come. we marked our calendar. 21 march 2011. tick tock tick tock.
we received updates from cinq energies, the organiser of the course. when we saw the timetable, we reread a few times. the timing shown that we would start the course at 6am and end at 5pm. *gulp* 6am? pranayama? the course would start on a monday until saturday, for a consecutive of 4 weeks, with a day off on sunday. and on the last week, we had to start at 5.30am. at that time, i was thinking "what have i commit to?" i was a nervous wreck when the days were getting nearer and nearer.
lots of questions in mind.
should we go for full vegetarian during that 4 weeks?
would we be able to follow the class? our sanskrit sucks big time!
would we be the weakest in the group?
orientation day arrived. we met up at cinq energies. we were almost late due to the bad traffic along the way. we were like "wtf, a bad start..". we heard that lance was very particular about punctuality. not good if we were late, right? and we arrived on the dot at 5pm. we went into the room. lance schuler, the master! hahaha. a lady was beside him. she introduced herself as claire, lance's assistant. we were told another teacher, phil, would be flying on the 3rd week.
both of them said, "elaine, jane & mimi?" we were shocked. "the 3 sisters". we nodded. lance said "i never have 3 sisters in my course before. fantastic!". we sat down. half of the class were foreigners. and we introduced ourselves, bla bla bla...we were given our reading materials, and shown to the room where we would spend most of our time for the next 4 weeks.
we woke up way before the alarm rang. we were anxious. the 1st day of the course. we made prepared our breakfast and lunch as we planned to cut out meat during this period. mum did not agree with us going totally meatless. but she was supportive. during the 4 weeks, she didnt cook meat for us, except fish. our diet was anything but chicken and pork. and we gained weight! hahaha. OMG! we thought we would be losing kilos, but nope! the 1st week, three of us gained a kilo each. we were wondering what caused the increment? we consoled ourselves by saying muscles weigh more than fats because we practised daily, in the morning for 2 hours. and we did adjustment in the afternoon.
we had anatomy classes for the first 2 weeks, and philosophy class for the remaining weeks. anatomy classes opened our eyes!! claire did a very good job in exposing us to what's inside our body. from muscles to nerves, to organs and tissues. she used a lot of books and also a dvd during her teaching. she might be petite, but she has lots of strength. whenever she led the class in the morning, we knew it would not be an easy class!!!! she taught us a lot of techniques. she didnt stay until the end of the course. she flew back to australia after 2 weeks.
the, phil took over from her and he taught us about philosophy. his knowledge was trully amazing. he experience was an eye opener to us too! would i be able to do what he has done? i doubt so. his love in yoga was trully amazing. he was strict, he was very discipline. he was totally different from claire. he made us sit up straight during his classes. hahaha.. he was the killer lecturer. but he has amazing voice! he sang the gayatri mantra in the morning, totally different from lance. slowly, we got used to his teaching, his style. he has his playful side during one session of asana practise. he has set the intention of the class "bring out the inner child in you". we had a great time playing around like kids.
and lance, fantastic teacher! fantastic was his favourite word. hahaha.. or should i say all of the 3 teachers favourite word. lance knew how to push us to go further into the postures, and helped us when we were stuck in between! he knew how far we could go. i hate handstand because i could not jump up. on the day we did inversion poses, i was the target. i already picked a corner so that nobody would noticed the big elephant jumping up and down. but he still saw me and came over and helped me up, not once, but many many times. "come on, JUMP! you can do this, COME ON!" those were the words that kept me going on that morning. i was really out of strength when he showed us one last pose. i didnt plan to do it. he wanted someone to become the "model". he picked me. "YOU! come here"! haha. the next day, i could barely moved my arms. we asked him,"would you remember all your students?" he said,"i would not remember their names, but i remember their bodies". how true, as everyone is unique.
in our class, half of them were french. lance was suprised to see more foreigners in the class. we made friends. we learnt some french word. we spent alot of times together having breakfast and lunch.
the last two weeks were very stressful for me. assessment time and due to unforeseen circumstances, lance and phil added more test (& stress!) for us. sanskrit test. pranayama test. and last but not least, philosophy test. we were already pulling our hairs out trying to make sure we didnt fail our final assessment. more test??? no choice, but to study and strive! all of us passed our assessments. phewwwwwwwwwwww... and on graduation day, we got to know that the sanskrit, pranyama and philosophy test were not part of their syllabus. first time being introduced to the course. we were the first batch. hahaha. they said they would apply this in their next ttc course.
i cried on the graduation day. why? i dont know. i just cried. when i finished 108 sun salution in the morning, i cried. when we sang gayatri mantra for the last time, i cried. emotions were running high. when we were asked to comment about the course as conclusion, i cried. i was the third to comment and the first to cry. the tears just rolled down. a part of me just broke down.
i truly enjoyed my 4 weeks course. some friends were shocked when i told them the price of the course. i told them that the things i have learnt worth more than the value of the money. some things could not be bought by money. just priceless. i told myself not to loose the "practise" after the 4 weeks. i made myself to wake up early in the morning to practise. pranayama, then asana practise for at least half an hour everyday! everyday? yea yeah, it's hard. yes, there would be days when my lazy bones kick in. but i guess it's ok to cheat some days.
i am reading "light of yoga" by BKS Iyengar. yoga book makes more sense to me now after the ttc course. hahahaha. there was this one liner which i find so true
~ success will follow him who practises, not he who practises not ~
thanks to lance, claire & phil for what they have taught. i promise i will apply what i have learnt. and i will continue to practise, as practise makes perfect, and to learn as learning is a never ending road.
namaste.
